Why is My Thermostat Reading Higher Than the Setting?

The weather in Naples, TX, can feel scorching at times. Thankfully, air conditioning offers relief. But when your AC system fails to reach the temperature set on your thermostat, it can be frustrating. Here’s why this can occur:

Heat Limits

Air conditioning systems can deliver an indoor temperature of 75 degrees in weather conditions of up to 95 degrees. Above 95 degrees, your system will become less efficient and may be unable to keep up with the heat. So on days when the mercury climbs above 95, it’s normal if the indoor temperature doesn’t match the one you set on your thermostat.

Thermostat Location

Your thermostat must be on an interior wall that’s in the center of your home and away from direct sunlight. There must also be good airflow and no sources of extra humidity nearby for it to do its job. If your thermostat placement doesn’t fit these parameters, it can result in problems.

System is the Wrong Size

HVAC systems come in various capacities because different sized homes have individual requirements. Your system must move the correct amount of air with the correct amount of force to run at peak efficiency. A system that’s wrong for your home will either fail to reach your thermostat setting or do so before the air has reached all your rooms.

Larger Homes With a Single Zone

You need multiple zones in larger homes because there’s no other way to evenly cool so much space. Each zone should have its own thermostat to allow consistent cooling throughout. If you have a large home but only one thermostat, this could well be the culprit.

Your System is Failing

Air conditioning systems can continue to run even when they have an issue that needs attention. Unlike your furnace, there are no safety issues that demand automatic shutdown in the case of a failure. If none of the above issues applies to your situation, it’s likely that your system needs repair.

Waiting for total thermostat failure can cause unnecessary expenses. Call our experts at Wood Air Conditioning & Plumbing to schedule emergency repairs or general maintenance. We’re always ready to help you.
