3 Ways to Boost HVAC Efficiency
HVAC maintenance is best left to the professionals, but that doesn’t mean DIY enthusiasts can’t assist their heating and cooling systems between maintenance appointments. A few simple DIY tasks will keep the conditioned air inside your home, protect it from unwanted unconditioned air, and boost HVAC efficiency.
Dress Your Windows
Avoid heat invading your space and undoing all your AC’s hard work when the sun shines through your windows by dressing them properly. If you don’t afford to install double-paned windows, consider putting solar screens on the outsides of the windows. These will block the heat and still let some light in on those rooms that receive sunlight. If not, blackout curtains will do the job well, too. You won’t get any light during the hottest part of the day, but a cooler room is worth it.
Pay Attention to Humidity
When you cook or shower, the humidity you create in your home disrupts the careful humidity balance your AC has created. If you have exhaust vents, make sure you’re cleaning them regularly because dust and debris get in the way of them working properly. Limit laundry and dishwashing to full loads as well or limit the use of hot water. A dehumidifier is also a good option if you need to seriously tackle humidity in your home. You’ll exchange the humid air for fresh air and take some of the pressure off your AC to manage the humidity.
Change Your AC’s Filters
In between maintenance appointments, change the filters in your AC. This is an easy DIY task homeowners can do that helps the AC’s efficiency and improves indoor air quality. Changing the filters takes very little time and requires little effort. If you’re not sure, ask one of our HVAC technicians to show you what to do the next time you request maintenance or repair service.
