3 Signs of Low Indoor Air Quality

If your Mt. Pleasant, Texas, home has poor indoor air quality, your utility bills could increase and your HVAC system could have an inconvenient, expensive breakdown. Indoor air pollutants like dirt, dust, household chemicals, mold, and pet dander are common, and the air quality inside many homes is actually lower than the outdoor air. Improving your air quality can prevent health problems and make you and your family more comfortable. Some of the most common signs of low indoor air quality are bad smells, allergies, and warm or drafty areas.

Bad Smells

An unpleasant smell could come from mold, pests, a gas leak, or another pollutant. It’s easy to get used to a smell that gets stronger over time, so you should step outside for a few minutes and then come back in to make sure you don’t miss anything. If you smell gas, leave your home and contact your utility company immediately.

Mold often produces a musty odor, and the nests and dead bodies of pests in your ductwork or around your home could create a variety of unpleasant odors. If you can’t find the source of a bad smell, a professional should examine your HVAC system and the rest of your home.

Allergies

Low indoor air quality can cause coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, headaches, nosebleeds, and other allergy symptoms. If your allergies get worse every time you enter your home, you could have mold, pollen, or other contaminants in your home. To improve your indoor air quality, clean your home and change your HVAC system’s air filters often. You can also use an air purifier and remove your shoes before you enter your home to keep dirt, dust, and pollen out.

Warm or Drafty Spots

Pests or other contaminants blocking your ductwork could cause warm or drafty areas. You could also have leaks in your ducts or your insulation. Have your ductwork cleaned and inspect your insulation for gaps regularly.
