History
Initially
settled in the early 1830s, Pittsburg was incorporated as an independent town in the years leading up to the Civil War. Thanks to the rich agricultural lands that surround it, Pittsburg quickly became an important trade hub for the northeastern Texas region. This importance only increased with the arrival of the railroads that connected the town to Dallas, Houston and New Orleans. During the 20th century, Pittsburg's economy diversified and became more service-focused. As the county seat of Camp County, it's currently one of the principal communities of the economically important I-30 corridor between Little Rock and Dallas.
Geography
Pittsburg is laid out in a gentle valley near several man-made bodies of water. Most of the land around town is earmarked for agricultural uses like corn, cotton and poultry production, but a number of tracts of old-growth pine woodland remain. Large swathes of protected land in the vicinity of Pittsburg include
Lake Bob Sandlin State Park and
Alley Creek Recreation Area. In addition to nearby I-30, major local highways include U.S. Highway 271 and Texas Highway 11. By car, Pittsburg is about 120 miles from Dallas and 250 miles from Houston.
Population and Demographics
As of the most recent Census tally, Pittsburg has a population of just under 5,000 people. Although nearby Mount Pleasant is significantly larger, Pittsburg boasts plenty of unique services and features a robust private economy. Many of the city's residents work in agriculture and construction, and new arrivals continue to change the region's demographics. The city is quite diverse: According to the Census, about half of the population has a diverse ethnic background. What's more, many Pittsburg residents self-identify as multi-racial. Although Pittsburg doesn't have a particularly high per-capita income, the area's low cost of living ensures that the local poverty rate remains relatively low.

Although early summer's humidity usually gives way to a drier regime by late July, the change can increase the likelihood of drought.
