History of Sulphur Springs
Originally established as Bright Star between 1852 and 1854, the name was changed to Sulphur Springs in 1871 to market the area as a health resort. Local physician, Dr. O. S. Davis, deeded land for the public square in 1870 as the town was chartered as the county seat. A courthouse was erected in 1882 on the east of the square. The town grew to a staggering 2,500 in population by 1885, and it had five churches, several
schools, three hotels, two banks, two weekly newspapers, furniture factories, foundries and machine shops, a flour mill, wagon factories, tanneries and an opera house. The economy of the city continued to thrive around the dairy industry. The
history of Sulphur Springs was prosperous well into the 20th century.
Geography
Located approximately 80 miles northeast of Dallas, Sulphur Springs is 21 square miles in total land area. Of that, 3.2 square miles is water.
Population
In 1885, the town recorded a population of 2,500, which was quite high for Texas settlements in that era. By 1914, the inhabitants had doubled to 5,000. It maintained this level until the Second World War. After the war, the population began growing steadily again. By 1970, the number doubled again at 10,642. By the year 2000, the number of people had reached 14,551. The most recent U.S. Census data for Sulphur Springs shows an estimate of 15,541 as of 2011.
Events & Attractions in Sulphur Springs
Sulphur Springs has a rich history of being an attraction in and of itself. However, many unique attractions and events have grown from the city's origin. For example, many Texas cities participate in annual chili cook off competitions. Sulphur Springs, on the other hand, has an annual ice cream competition, aptly named The Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freezeoff. It happens every year in the second week of June, concurrent with the
Hopkins County Dairy Festival and Hot Air Balloon Rally. The city is also home of the Leo St. Clair Music Box Collection, unique and antique music boxes owned by WWII veterans and movie stars. Also, Sulphur Springs has public restrooms made of one-way reflective glass. The glass bathrooms sit outdoors in the public square. Another attraction is the Southwest Dairy Museum, a 10,000 square foot display of the history and importance of the dairy industry. The museum offers complementary lunch and ice cream.

Sulphur Springs, like much of east Texas, has a temperature climate with warm summers. The hottest month is August, and January is the coolest. Peak summer temperatures tend toward the upper 80s to low 90s. The highest recorded temperature was 115°F in 1969. In the winter, lows tend to fall in the mid to low 30s. The lowest recorded temperature was -4°F in 1989.
