6 Tasks to Keep Your AC System Efficient This Summer

When summer arrives, you want to be sure that your cooling system isn’t going to fail. To maximize every dollar, you should have a team of professionals maximize your air conditioner’s output. Here are six tasks that can help keep your AC system running efficiently this summer in Mount Pleasant, TX.

Replace the Air Filter

The first thing we’ll check during a routine maintenance inspection is the air filter. Air filters are an important component of a cooling system. They trap the particles and allergens floating in the air so that the unit can properly do its job.

A dirty air filter prevents the system from operating at peak efficiency. Once the filter has layers of buildup, it could cause the unit to overheat. Replacing the filter at least four times a year is recommended to prevent repairs down the road.

Inspect and Clean the Coils

An AC unit’s coils have to be inspected and cleaned because they gather dust over time, so we want to clean them up at least once a year. When the coil is dirty, it has a negative impact on the airflow being pushed out of the unit. This can lead to higher energy bills because, although the unit is working harder, it’s producing less output.

Check the Condensate Drain

It’s important to ensure that an AC system isn’t clogging, so we take a look at the drain. If the unit isn’t able to drain, humidity builds up. The excess moisture is bad for the surrounding furnishings.

Too much humidity could also lead to microbial growth. This reduces the quality of the indoor air.

Optimize the Refrigerant Level

The refrigerant level will be topped off as part of routine maintenance. The refrigerant is the agent that cools the air. It changes from a liquid to a gas and then back to a liquid.

If the coils have the tiniest crack, the refrigerant begins to leak. The result is air that’s not as cool as you hope, so you’re probably going to run the unit longer.

Check for Leaks

It’s important to check for leaks at least once a year. If refrigerant is leaking, it means that there’s probably an issue with the coils. Leaks could also be a result of a clogged drain. Never try to fix a refrigerant leak yourself. To protect your safety and system, always hire a professional to repair the refrigerant leak.

Consider a Thermostat Upgrade

An accurate thermostat is a must. If it’s not operating as expected, you might end up running the cooling system longer than necessary. As a result, your cooling bills will increase.

A thermostat that’s no longer accurate can benefit from an upgrade. A smart thermostat can be programmed. Plus, thanks to new technology, you can use your smartphone to set up your preferences. The remote accessibility allows you to change your home’s temperature from anywhere.

The jury is still out on whether the ductwork of your cooling system should be cleaned at least once a year. If you believe that vermin or other critters may be roaming in the ducts, call in the professionals so we can take a look. Ducts that have not been cleaned in the last few years should also be looked at because they are building up layers of dust.
