These Common A/C Problems Can Ruin Your Day

Common A/C ProblemsRunning into any of these common A/C problems on a hot, sticky day can cause a good deal of discomfort. Before calling in a pro, you may be able to solve the issue on your own should any of these four situations occur.

  • Condenser won’t run. Check the circuit breaker and reset it if it’s tripped. The fuse for the condenser could have blown. Before accessing the fuses, turn that circuit off. Look for signs of wear or discoloration. If your hardware or home improvement centers don’t have replacements, you may need to contact an HVAC professional. If neither of these steps solves the problem, you could have a bad motor or compressor that requires professional help.
  • System runs but doesn’t cool. Remove any grass, weeds or other debris from around the condenser and gently hose off the coil. If the condenser is clean, there could be a problem with the compressor or the refrigerant level might be too low. Improper refrigerant levels cause many of the most common A/C problems. Both situations call for a professional to service the system.
  • A/C runs but cooling is inadequate. If this only happens when the weather is excessively hot, your A/C could be too small for your home. Try to reduce the cooling load by closing window coverings and putting off heat-producing activities. Plus, when it’s really hot outside, just about any A/C will have trouble meeting a low thermostat setting. You may also have a dirty evaporator coil inside the air handler. If you’ve run your cooling system with a dirty air filter, the dust can enter the unit and coat the coil, impeding the vital heat-exchange process. If you can access the coil, clean it with a soft cloth. If you can’t, you’ll need professional assistance.
  • System starts and stops quickly. Obstructions around the condenser or inside the air handler can cause this problem. Check the air filter and clean the condenser area. If it still won’t run long after cleaning, you probably need to call your HVAC contractor.
